Elect The Lords

Campaign for a democratic second chamber

“Democracy requires the active consent of the people. That is why we believe that the second chamber must be predominantly elected. This will improve lawmaking and decisions taken in our name by increasing the legitimacy and strengthening the accountability of the whole of our Parliament. We call for democratic reform of the House of Lords at the earliest opportunity.” Click here to sign this statement.

Elect the Lords is a grassroots campaign. Opinion polls consistently demonstrate that the British public support replacing the House of Lords with a predominantly elected second chamber. Simply by signing up to the campaign, you can demonstrate to Parliament that this is an important issue it must address.

Other things you can do:

Get others to sign up

You can download a sign up form from this website to get your friends, family and work colleagues to sign up to the campaign.

Write to your local newspaper

The letters page in newspapers is read more widely than almost any other section other than the front page. They are an excellent way of getting your point of view across to thousands of local people at minimal cost.

We are keen to encourage people to write into their local newspapers whenever a topical issue relevant to House of Lords reform crops up. You can do this as and when you come across issues yourself, or sign up to our letter writing network and we will send you details of relevant stories as and when they crop up.

Campaign locally

If you're keen to campaign further, you might want to consider joining an existing local group that is part of the Elect The Lords Campaign, or starting one up yourself if there isn't one in your area.

You can express an interest in getting involved in a local group on our registration form.
